What we store
Krotze is built to know as little as possible about you. We store no e-mail addresses, phone numbers or IP-based profiles. An account is a self-chosen username plus a secret key kept in your browser's local storage. Your username, the messages and files you post, and the channels you belong to are stored only for as long as the channel exists.
Automatic deletion
Every channel has an inactivity retention (default 7 days, maximum 365 days, configurable by the channel owner). When a channel has been inactive that long, all of its messages, media files, membership data and meta information are deleted permanently from the database and file storage. Uploaded files and their previews are additionally deleted 24 hours after upload, and each member can open an upload only within a short viewing window via a personal one-time link. There are no backups of deleted content.
Manual deletion
You can delete your own messages at any time. When you leave a channel you can wipe everything you posted there. “Delete all my data” in your profile removes your identity, memberships, messages and uploaded files across all channels. Channel owners can destroy a channel completely for all members. Deletion is immediate and irreversible.
Cookies & local storage
The chat app uses browser local storage for your device key and UI preferences. The key never leaves your device: requests are signed with it rather than carrying it, so it cannot be captured from network traffic. The admin area uses a session cookie for the administrator login. No tracking or advertising cookies are used, and no data is shared with third parties.
Server logs
The web server keeps short-lived technical logs (time, requested URL, status code) for security and debugging. Logs are rotated and are not linked to chat identities.
